Here come the girls..!
It’s been long-awaited, but the girls were back together again for the prestigious Anita Nott 5k Memorial Race at Jesmond Dene on Monday 27th June.
The women-only run attracts some top quality female athletes from across the North East and is held in memory of Heaton Harrier Anita Nott, who was herself a force to be reckoned with in the female veteran category. She immersed herself in the region’s running community, and I know all our Wallsend ladies feel it a great honour to run with her comrades and remember such an inspiring woman.
It’s a tough old 5k but the weather was kind and the scenery beautiful. Starting on Armstrong Bridge, the undulating course takes runners through Jesmond Dene and back across the bridge into Heaton Park, up a hefty old climb before finally, the relief of a nice down hill back to the finish on Armstrong Bridge.
All our women gave it their all. We were sad not to have wor speedy lasses Donna, Alex and Kirsty, but it was wonderful to see a sea of green and gold stunners flying the flag and absolutely smashing it along the home straight.
Emily James had a cracking run (ok it’s me writing this so forgive me for blowing my own trumpet!) and came in second v40 in 21.18. Special mention to Natalie Carruthers who made her debut race appearance in a green and gold vest! Thanks to all our supporters on the night too. It always makes such a difference.
Our tenacious team were:
Emily James, Laura Stout, Meghan Pattinson, Chrystal Skeldon, Joy Blackburn, Myra Robson, Nikki Stewart, Natalie Carruthers, Abi Welch, Christine Stretesky, Lesley Cummings.
