Track and Field triumphs

What a weekend we had for track and field in all age categories!

Firstly, a massive shout out to Sam Charlton who gained a huge personal best in the 3000m at the BMC in Glasgow. A jaw-dropping 8mins 33secs! Is there no stopping him?!?

Luke and Oscar put in tremendous performances at Gateshead Minors Meeting Round 2. Round 3 is on June 24th. This is a great event similar to the NOTAN Grand Prix at Churchill Playing Fields. Competition entries are paid for by the club. Please let Ross know if you would like to take part.

Team Wallsend & Blyth had another inspirational track and field meet at Jarrow on Sunday (3rd June), coming an amazing third place for the second event running, against the North East’s top clubs.

Throwers Paul Corrigan, Julie Williams and Christine Stretesky started us off in the morning. Then what followed throughout the day was nothing short of miraculous…

Denver ran his first 400 hurdles event in 62 secs, Danielle Hodgkinson ran and won both the 800m and 1500m on her first start in the Green and Gold for a few years (so great to have her back), backed up superbly by Erin, who also won her 1500m. Andy smashed a 2:01 800m, showing sub-two minutes is just around the corner. Emily is improving all the time and came second in the 3000m B race (shot put is a work in progress!)

Jordan ran a superb 1500m for his first track and field meet in six years and captain Simon broke his 5k pb! Tash was next, running a 16 sec PB of 10:43 in the steeplechase. Then we had our young juniors Erin Anderson, Katherin Sayer and Elena Walker who all ran and jumped four events each. Thanks go to coach Simon Williams for keeping the youngsters fresh for these events.

Our friends at Blyth had some incredible runs, throws and jumps. There was a PB of 7:03m in the long jump for Peter Skirrow (beating me by almost 2m); Josh Fiddaman raced 1:56 in the 800m; Rachelle Falloon ran a fantastic 10:43 in the 3000m; Daniel won the 110m hurdles and sits in second place in the UK v35 category. He also has club records in the 4x100m and 4x400m. Lots of other Blyth athletes racked up the points to help maintain our strong third place.

A huge thanks to all athletes, officials and supporters. Our next event is Sunday 8th July at Hexham. I’m hoping to see this group back again and pushing hard for another top three finish.
